Where is the thyroid gland located?

~ The thyroid gland is located under the voicebox on either side of the windpipe.

What substance is required for the thyroid gland to work normally?

~ The thyroid gland needs a certain amount of iodine to be able to secrete its hormones normally.

What might happen if the thyroid gland does not get enough of this substance?

~ If the thyroid does not have an adequate supply of iodine, it is forced to work harder to secrete its hormones and, as a result, it may become enlarged. Such an enlargement of the thyroid is referred to as goiter.

How does the thyroid gland control calcium levels in the blood?

~ If calcium levels in the blood become too great, the thyroid gland secretes a hormone that forces the excess calcium into the bones.
