What is a genome?

~ The full set of a species' genetic material is called its genome. The human genome consists of approximately 3 billion nucleotides and contains between 20,000 and 30,000 genes.

Describe The Human Genome Project.

~ The Human Genome Project was launched in 1990 to determine the sequences of base pairs that make up human DNA and to map out the human genome. Through this map, scientists hope to find cures for heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease.

What surprising facts have scientists learned about the human genome?

~ Scientists have found that 98 percent of human DNA does not code for proteins, and the 2 percent that does is distributed unevenly among the chromosomes. For example, even though chromosome 19 is very small, it has a large number of genes that code for proteins, and chromosomes 4 and 8, which are large, contain few genes.
