Pre-Algebra

### Learning Made Easy

Apply the mathematical problem solving process to solve a real life problem about ratio and proportion.

### Now You Know

After completing this tutorial, you will be able to complete the following:

• Use ratio and proportion to solve problems.

### Everything You'll Have Covered

In this Activity Object, students will use problem solving strategies to figure out the maximum amount of cookies they could make with the available ingredients. Be sure that students are familiar with the concept of ratios, proportions, and the Cross Product Property.

The following key vocabulary terms will be used throughout this Activity Object:

• ratio - a comparison of two numbers or quantities For example: A baseball team won 15 out of 25 games. The ratio of total games won to total games played is .
• proportion - an equation when it states equality between two ratios For example: If the ratio of total baseball games won to total games played is and there were 25 total games, how many games did the team win? This can be solved using a proportion: • Cross Product Property states that "in a proportion, the product of the means is equal to the product of the extremes." In the proportion , b and c are the means and a and d are the extremes. So, the cross product is: ad = bc For example: Given the previous proportion, , solve for n using the Cross Product Property. 25 and 3 are the means and n and 5 are the extremes Cross multiply: Divide each side by 5: x = 15
