The purpose of this Activity Object is to help students understand that shapes can be placed in multiple categories depending upon their characteristics or properties. The graphic organizer provides a visual representation of the relationships among various quadrilaterals. All of the shapes in the oval are quadrilaterals. The colored circles represent categories of quadrilaterals.

The following terms are used in the Activity Object. It is strongly recommended that all terms are introduced to students prior to presenting this Activity Object.

- congruent - the same
- kite - a four-sided object with two pairs of congruent adjacent sides
- isosceles trapezoid - a four-sided object with one pair of congruent, parallel sides
- parallelogram - a four-sided object with two pairs of parallel sides
- quadrilateral - a four-sided object
- rectangle - a four-sided object with four 90 degree angles and two pairs of parallel sides
- right trapezoid - a four-sided object with one pair of parallel sides and one 90 degree angle
- rhombus - a four-sided object with two pairs of parallel sides in which all sides are congruent
- square - a four-sided object with four 90 degree angles and two pairs of parallel sides in which all sides are the same length (congruent)
- trapezoid - a four-sided object with one pair of parallel sides
